If you suffer from frequent break outs, acne, whiteheads, blackheads, uneven skin tone, texture, discoloration, and hyperpigmentation, then you’ve got to get your hands on azelaic acid!
Often times overlooked and not commonly mentioned, this antibacterial antioxidant is not only gentle, effective, and perfect for those who are sensitive to exfoliating treatments.
So how does azelaic acid work? It is a tyrosinase inhibitor, this means that to treat hyperpigmentation on the skin and even out skin tone as well.
Azelaic acid is not only an acid, but in fact an antibacterial antioxidant that unclogs the pores. It works similar to salicylic acid and adapalene but is much milder and far less irritating. This makes it ideal for sensitive, acne prone, and rosacea skin types.
Azelaic acid benefits:
- Lightens acne scars and dark spots by decreasing melanin production
- Gently exfoliates
- Cleans out the pores, draws out debris, and keeps pores clean
- Reduces acne causing bacteria
- Calms sensitive skin
- Topical treatment for acne, rosacea, melasma and hyperpigmentation
- Anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-keratinizing properties
- Exfoliating and antioxidant benefits to smooth and even out skin tone
- Reduces redness
- Reduces skin inflammation
- Possible side effects: irritation, dry skin, tingling, itching, and or stinging
- Also note azelaic acid is gentler than AHA’s and BHA’s
To start out, it is safe to use 10% azelaic acid. It is the highest percentage over the counter, however if you want 15%-20% that is prescription strength and needs to be approved by a dermatologist.
I personally have had great results with azelaic acid. I will keep this in my routine and I am excited to see the long term results down the road.
I would recommend others who may be hesitant or have more sensitive skin types to give it a try, because it is considered to be much gentler, yet a very effective product.
