When it comes to hair care consistency is everything. I wanted to make both of my blogs dedicated to help people learn about the basics of hair care and achieve their hair care goals.
Its not simple at all trying to navigate the beauty section of any store when you have advertisements promising the sun, moon, and stars that their new hair care product is going to reverse the damage done to your hair and give you a clean slate.
This is just not the case. There are silicones within detangling sprays, leave in conditioners, hair serums, and hair oils that coat the hair shaft giving it the “appearance of change”, but this is not the case.
(If you want an honest opinion about silicones, click here).
Anything past the root of your hair is considered dead. Therefore, it needs an extra conditioning agent if you want your hair to keep that soft, shiny, and detangled state.
When you it comes to layering your hair care, its similar to skin care. Do the wateriest consistency’s first and heavier creams and oils last.
If you follow this order for your hair care, you will see results:
- Detangler spray
- Leave-in conditioner (these can be hair milks or a cream)
- Hair serum’s or hair oil’s
You can think of a detangler spray as a face primer. It preps the hair for the following steps you will be applying to it.
It purpose is to aid in getting rid of tangles when your hair is wet from the shower. I personally brush my hair after the shower otherwise it gets very frizzy and knotted. Everyone has their own method and beliefs, but I like to detangle my hair before it dries.
After your detangling spray you will follow up with a leave-in conditioner
Certain products do work better for certain hair types. I recommend following the rule of, if you have fine or thinner hair, avoid heavy conditioning products that contain coconut oil, keratin, or proteins. These will weigh down your hair and take away any volume that you may want to keep. It can also give your hair a flat greasy appearance.
For the thicker/course hair types you can be a bit more generous with your application. Proteins are your friends for deeper conditioning and detangling. You can dabble with heavier oils and keratin may even benefit your strands.
The thing with hair is it is trial and error. What may work for you may not work for somebody else, but that’s the fun part! Discovering what best suits your hair.
Our last step is optional, but in my personal experience has benefited my strands so much:
Adding a hair serum or oil in as your very last step.
I prefer to add in a hair serum while my hair is still wet and after I’ve used my hair detangler and leave-in conditioner. The reason you want to add it to your hair while it’s still wet, is because it aid’s in emulsifying the oils making them more easily spreadable.
You’ll need a lot less of the product than you would with dry hair; less than or just about a dime size amount will be more than enough.
The hair oil and or serum works by sealing in your previous products, ergo no moisture loss and preventing frizzy, dry hair.
When your hair is properly moisturized it becomes more flexible and less prone to breakage. When you have a proper hair care routine this will help you to tame flyway’s and prevent more split ends.
Split ends are inevitable, but they can be manageable. With a good solid routine, you can help your hair to become more manageable and less prone to breakage.
When you do have a good routine as well this will help your hair to grow out. If that’s a desired result, having healthy hair that isn’t constantly breaking is how you’re going to achieve it!
You’ve learned the basics of hair care! Now you can apply these tips and tricks to best suit your daily lifestyle.
